Body Adiposity Index
Estimate body fat from your height and hip measurement.
Body composition estimate
How to measure your hips
Keep the tape level and snug without compressing the skin. Measure around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks.
Your estimate in context
Body-fat reference context
Estimate is outside the displayed scale; its exact value is shown above.
Reference intervals describe body-fat percentage; they are not validated BAI cutoffs. Gallagher et al., Table 4: provisional values for African American and white adults, not universal population norms.
Calculation & assumptions
Example (your values)
95 ÷ 1.701.5 − 18 = 24.9
Sex and age do not change the BAI equation. Accuracy varies across populations and individuals. This tool is for adults; do not use it to assess children or pregnancy. The input limits are technical checks, not clinical validation limits.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need my weight?
No. BAI uses hip circumference in centimetres and height in metres. Weight is not part of this equation.
Where should I measure my hips?
Stand upright with feet together and measure horizontally around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks. Keep the tape level without compressing the skin. Measure height without shoes.
How accurate is BAI?
BAI is an estimate with potentially substantial individual error. It may overestimate or underestimate measured body fat and is not consistently more accurate than BMI or circumference measurements. Use an appropriate clinical body-composition assessment when precision matters.
Can BAI diagnose obesity?
No. BAI alone cannot establish obesity, metabolic health or visceral fat. The optional reference intervals are provisional body-fat context, not validated BAI diagnostic thresholds or treatment targets.
