Recheck body weight, BCS and muscle condition. Growth and weight-loss plans need an appropriate weight basis; senior age alone does not set calories.
Nutrition Plan Checks
- 1Choose life stage and weight basis
- 2Read the food’s calorie label
- 3Monitor weight and body condition
Formula & Worked Example
70 × 100.75 = 393.64 kcal/day
Daily energy = RER × factor
393.64 × 1.6 = 629.82 ≈ 630 kcal/day
Main food = daily energy − treat calories
629.82 ÷ 400 = 1.57 cups/day
Two equal meals: 0.79 cup per meal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the daily calorie result exact?
No. RER and life-stage factors are starting estimates. Monitor weight, body condition, muscle condition and food intake, and adjust with your veterinary team.
Which weight should I use for weight loss?
Use an individually assessed target weight and a veterinary feeding plan. The weight-loss mode requires that target; it does not derive one from breed size.
Can cups always be converted to grams?
No. Conversion needs the food’s stated or measured grams per cup. Energy per cup can calculate cups directly; energy per 100 g or kg can calculate grams directly.
Should all senior dogs use a low factor?
No. Age alone does not determine energy needs. Activity, muscle mass and health require individual assessment; the senior option asks for an individualized factor.
More nutrition questions
How are puppies handled?
Growth examples use 3 × RER under 4 months and 2 × RER from 4 months, based on current weight. These are starting estimates, not a complete growth diet or a fixed rule for every breed. Recheck growth and body condition.
How are treats included?
The entered 0–10% reserve is part of the calculated daily energy. It is deducted before calculating main-food portions. Food-based treats and other snacks must still be counted.
Does a density-unit switch change the physical estimate?
Per-100-g and per-kg values convert directly. Cup conversion requires grams per cup. Without it, switching between mass-based and cup-based density clears the value so you can enter the appropriate label number.
Can I leave the food label blank?
Yes. Energy can still be estimated, but food portions are unavailable until a positive calorie density is entered. A blank cup mass prevents only the secondary cups/grams conversion.
What do the life-stage factors mean?
They multiply estimated resting energy. Examples are neutered adult 1.6, intact adult 1.8, active/light work 2.0, inactive adult 1.2 and vet weight-loss plan 1.0. Actual needs vary; custom factors can be entered.
Does selecting a vet target automatically change calories?
Only if the target-weight basis is selected. Weight-loss mode requires a veterinarian-assessed target. No ideal weight is inferred from breed or current weight alone.
Why do rounded meals not sum exactly?
The tool calculates from full precision, then rounds display values. Dividing into equal meals can give a displayed sum a little different from the displayed daily total. Use the unrounded calculation as the underlying budget.
What is outside this calculator?
Nutrient adequacy, illness, gestation, lactation, body-fat diagnosis, food allergy treatment and moderate/heavy working-dog protocols. A calorie match alone does not establish a complete and balanced diet.
