Your Dog’s Life-Stage Timeline
Care bands are illustrative. Growth and maturity vary; senior planning uses the last 25% of the chosen reference lifespan, not a diagnosis.
Breed Longevity at a Glance
Selected 2024 UK study medians · these are not age-adjusted remaining-life estimates.
A median is not a deadline. Individual care decisions need veterinary assessment; the human-age mapping is a research comparison, not a validated all-breed clinical score.
Research Model & Worked Example
Current age = 5 yr · not subtracted from median
Research human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31
16 × ln(5) + 31 = 56.75 ≈ 57 years
Wang et al., 2020 · model developed from 104 Labradors.
Not a universal breed conversion or a test of your dog’s DNA.
Age-specific remaining life requires a life table. RVC / VetCompass explains why it is not “average lifespan − current age”.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this predict when my dog will die?
No. The study median describes a population, not an individual.
Why isn’t remaining life just median minus age?
Dogs already alive at a given age need an age-conditioned life table.
Is the human-age formula valid for every breed?
It was derived from Labrador methylation data and is a research illustration.
Are all dogs senior at seven years?
No. Breed, size, development and individual clinical status matter.
More longevity questions
What is a study median?
A median survival age is the time when the estimated population survival curve reaches 50%. It is not a personal deadline or the mean remaining life at your current age.
Why do the 2022 and 2024 studies differ?
They use different datasets, methods and statistics. This module uses 2024 median survival references; the 2022 VetCompass study explains age-specific life tables. The numbers are not blended.
Does breed size set a guaranteed lifespan?
No. The small, medium and large values are medians of purebred size groups in a UK study, not universal breed-specific ranges.
Is there a flat-face penalty?
No automatic percentage deduction is used. Named flat-faced breeds have their own reported study medians. This avoids combining group statistics as if they were individual clinical adjustment factors.
Why is human-age mapping unavailable for other breeds?
The included logarithmic mapping was developed using 104 Labrador retrievers. This tool does not extrapolate it to all breeds.
Why are very young or older Labradors not mapped?
The calculator conservatively shows the research illustration only for ages 1–16 years. It does not extrapolate beyond that tool range or create negative human ages for very young puppies.
Can a dog live beyond its breed median?
Yes. A median is not an upper age limit. The timeline continues beyond it and never sets remaining life to zero.
How are care bands selected?
The display uses illustrative transitions at 0.75 and 3.5 years, plus a senior planning threshold at 75% of the selected reference. Development varies, and individual clinical judgement is required. No automatic geriatric or end-of-life diagnosis is made.
