Welding Calculator Calculate welding heat input and electrode/wire consumption for MIG, TIG, or stick welding. — free online calculator.

Formula

Heat input (kJ/in) = amperes × volts × 60/(travel speed in/min × 1000); steel wire mass (lb/ft) = π(d/2)^2 × 12 × 0.284 (density in lb/in³); deposition rate (lb/hr) = wire feed in/min × mass per inch × 60. Assumes a circular solid steel wire; excludes efficiency and waste.
  • Welding Calculator calculates its result from Amperage, Voltage, Travel Speed, Wire / Electrode Diameter, Wire Feed Speed (MIG). It uses the formula Heat Input (kJ/in) = (A × V × 60) / (speed_ipm × 1000); Deposition (lbs/hr) = WFS × wire_wt/in × 60. Change any input to recalculate the result instantly.
  • The main inputs are Amperage, Voltage, Travel Speed, Wire / Electrode Diameter, Wire Feed Speed. Enter them in the units and format shown in the calculator.
  • Keep measurements and project assumptions consistent before comparing or combining values.
  • Changing any input above recalculates the result with the same calculation engine used by this page.

Example: Welding

Inputs
  • Amperage: 200
  • Voltage: 25
  • Travel Speed: 12
  • Wire / Electrode Diameter: 0.035
  • Wire Feed Speed: 300 MIG

With 200 A, 25 V, 12 in/min, 0.035 in wire and 300 in/min feed: 25.00 kJ/in heat, 0.003279 lb/ft wire, 4.9183 lb/hr theoretical deposition.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Welding calculate?

Welding Calculator Calculate welding heat input and electrode/wire consumption for MIG, TIG, or stick welding. — free online calculator.

Which values should I enter?

Enter Amperage, Voltage, Travel Speed, Wire / Electrode Diameter, Wire Feed Speed using the units and format shown beside each field.

What formula does this calculator use?

The calculator uses the following relationship: Heat input (kJ/in) = amperes × volts × 60/(travel speed in/min × 1000); steel wire mass (lb/ft) = π(d/2)^2 × 12 × 0.284 (density in lb/in³); deposition rate (lb/hr) = wire feed in/min × mass per inch × 60. Assumes a circular solid steel wire; excludes efficiency and waste..

Why might my result differ from another source?

Results can differ when another source uses different units, rounding rules, conventions or assumptions. Compare the inputs and definitions before comparing results.

Does the result update automatically?

Yes. Changing an input updates the result using the same calculation engine shown on this page.
