Cat Benadryl Dosage Calculator

Product strengths are not recommended doses. Illustrations do not identify your product.

Cat & prescription details

mg/kg

Enter per-dose instructions, not mg/kg per day.

Enter the instructions your veterinarian gave you.

mg per tablet
Oral-liquid concentration (optional)

Enter the concentration on the approved product label.

Use the exact label ratio, such as milligrams in the stated milliliters. A different concentration changes the volume.

Frequency must come from your veterinarian. Daily totals represent a steady schedule, not a start-time calendar.

Before using a result

  1. Match the prescribed active ingredient.
  2. Verify strength, concentration and oral route.
  3. Ask your vet to confirm a measurable amount.

This page covers diphenhydramine only. The brand name alone does not identify ingredients. This tool does not check suitability, drug interactions or product approval.

Tablet splitting needs confirmation

An equivalent fraction is not a splitting recommendation. Do not round to a convenient portion or assume syringe markings can measure it. Confirm a suitable formulation with your veterinarian; do not split capsules or unsuitable formulations.

Act now

Contact your veterinarian promptly for suspected overdose, accidental ingestion or an unexpected reaction. Do not wait for symptoms or a calculator result.

  1. Prevent further access to the medicine, if safe.
  2. Keep the packaging. Note the product, strength, amount and time involved.
  3. Call your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic for instructions.

Do not induce vomiting or give home remedies unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you.

What this medicine does

Diphenhydramine is a sedating antihistamine. Veterinary use may be extra-label; the veterinarian’s prescription takes priority over human package instructions.

Illustrative resting cat

Possible adverse effects

Drowsiness, unusual excitement, digestive problems or trouble passing urine can occur. Contact your vet about unexpected effects; severe symptoms need urgent care.

Read monitoring guidance

Watch for changes after administration. Profound sleepiness, marked agitation, tremors, seizures or breathing problems need prompt veterinary assessment. A quiet or sleepy appearance alone does not prove the medication is safe or appropriate.

Conditions and interactions to disclose

Tell your vet about glaucoma, urinary or bowel obstruction, heart or thyroid disease, pregnancy, young age and all other medicines or supplements.

View interaction notes

Diphenhydramine can be unsuitable for very young animals or those allergic to related antihistamines. Sedating medicines, anticholinergic drugs and some antidepressants can interact. Liver or kidney disease may prolong effects. Discuss these factors before use; this calculator does not evaluate them.

Missed doses & storage

Follow the written plan; do not double a missed dose. Keep the medicine labeled, out of reach of children and animals.

Read handling guidance

Ask your vet how to resume the schedule after a missed dose. If a dose is vomited, spat out or its delivery is uncertain, ask before giving more. Follow the exact product’s storage and beyond-use instructions; compounded products may differ. Use an appropriate oral measuring device, not a kitchen spoon.

Clinical background: VCA Animal Hospitals · Merck Veterinary Manual. This guide is not a complete clinical assessment.

Avoid unapproved combination products.

Decongestants, pain medicines and other added drugs may be harmful. Have every active and inactive ingredient checked; products and brand formulations differ between countries. A children’s, alcohol-free or single-brand label alone does not establish suitability for a cat.

How the conversion works

Dose (mg) = weight (kg) × prescribed rate (mg/kg)

Tablets = dose ÷ tablet strength

mL = dose ÷ concentration (mg/mL)

Calculation (current inputs)

Enter the veterinarian-provided dose to show the calculation.

Daily totals are arithmetic averages over 24 hours, not a treatment calendar. No automatic rounding to tablet fractions or oral-syringe markings; a veterinarian must confirm an appropriate formulation and measurable amount.

Frequently asked questions

Can this calculator choose a dose?

No. It converts instructions provided by your veterinarian. It does not diagnose your cat, determine whether diphenhydramine is appropriate, select a dose or certify a safe dose. No prescribed dose is filled in automatically.

Are all Benadryl products the same?

No. The brand name can refer to different active ingredients and formulations across countries. This tool is for veterinarian-directed diphenhydramine only, not combination products. Verify every active and inactive ingredient, including alcohol, sweeteners and other additives, with your veterinarian.

Can I split this tablet?

Only if your veterinarian confirms the exact tablet is suitable for splitting and the required amount can be measured accurately. The numerical tablet equivalent is not an instruction to divide, crush or open a product. The calculator never rounds to a convenient half or quarter; capsules, extended-release and unsuitable tablets require a different formulation.

How often should it be given?

Use the exact interval prescribed for your cat. No interval is selected by default. The 8,12 and24 hour options are input conveniences, not recommendations. The daily amount uses24 divided by the entered interval as a steady schedule average; it is not a calendar with exact administration times.

What does the Cat Benadryl Dosage Calculator calculate?

It calculates an entered single dose in milligrams, its mathematical tablet equivalent, an optional liquid-volume equivalent and an optional steady-schedule daily amount. It does not calculate a therapeutic or toxicity threshold.

Which values should I enter?

Enter the current weight in kg or lb and either the veterinarian-provided mg/kg rate or total mg per dose. Confirm the tablet strength and liquid label concentration. Select an interval only if one was prescribed. Blank dose fields do not produce a suggested dose.

What formula does this calculator use?

Dose=kg×prescribed mg/kg. When total mg is entered, that amount is used directly. Tablets=dose/tablet strength. Liquid concentration=label mg/label mL, and mL=dose/concentration. Steady-schedule daily amount=dose×24/interval in hours.

How are pounds converted to kilograms?

The calculator uses1lb=0.45359237kg. Changing the unit converts the weight while preserving the calculation. Switching between rate and total dose preserves an already-valid single-dose amount using the current weight.

What if the liquid concentration is different?

Enter both the milligrams and the volume printed on your veterinarian-approved product. For example12.5mg in5mL is2.5mg/mL, but not every liquid has that concentration. No liquids are recommended or approved by this calculator.

Does this page provide a sample dosing regimen?

No. The prescribed-dose field starts blank. Product-strength choices identify formulation strengths only; they do not select a dose. Only your veterinarian can provide diagnostic and dosing instructions for your cat.

What if there is an adverse reaction or overdose?

Contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary facility immediately for suspected overdose or adverse effects. Breathing difficulty or collapse requires urgent care. Do not increase, repeat or adjust a dose based on this tool.

Does the result update automatically?

Yes. The controls update the mathematical results, formulation selection and calculation explanation. Invalid or missing required values clear the affected output rather than preserving an old answer. The cat picture is decorative and does not change with dose or formulation.

What if a dose was missed, vomited or only partly given?

Follow the veterinarian’s missed-dose plan and never double a dose. If you are uncertain how much was swallowed, ask the veterinarian before repeating it. The calculator cannot reconstruct a dose already given or determine when another dose is safe.

Does a result rule out interactions or an emergency?

No. This is dose-to-formulation arithmetic, not an appropriateness check, clinical interaction screen or overdose assessment. Breathing difficulty, collapse, seizures, marked abnormal behavior or suspected overdose require prompt veterinary contact. Do not wait for a calculation or induce vomiting without professional instructions.

Can I split tablets?

Only if your veterinarian approves the exact formulation.
