A Closer Look at Body Condition
- Ribs or bony landmarks may be prominent.
- Arrange a nutritional assessment.
- Ribs are easy to feel, without excess covering.
- A waist is visible behind the ribs.
- Ribs may be harder to feel under fat.
- Waist definition may be lost; abdominal fat may increase.
Calculation & assumptions
RER = 70 × weight(kg)0.75
Daily energy = RER × selected factor, or your veterinarian-set target
Food budget = daily energy − treats
Food split is based on calories, not grams or volume. Portions are rounded for display; the report preserves calculation precision.
Life-stage factors & limitations
Starting scenarios: neutered adult 1.2, intact adult 1.4, inactive adult 1.0 and growing kitten 2.5. An active-adult 1.4 scenario is adjustable. Weight loss uses 0.8 × RER at a veterinarian-agreed target weight. Pregnancy and lactation require a veterinary calorie target here. These are estimates, not fixed prescriptions. Never fast a cat or make abrupt calorie restrictions for weight loss.
Frequently asked questions
How do I use the food label?
Find the metabolizable calorie content per cup, can, 100 g or kilogram. Cup and can gram equivalents require the weight of that product’s cup or can; no universal cup-to-gram conversion is used. Changing a calorie unit preserves the density when the necessary weight is supplied.
Can I mix dry and wet food?
Yes, if both suit your cat’s life stage and any medical needs. Allocate their shares of the complete-food calorie budget after treats. Mixing by calorie percentage does not mean the same percentage by weight. Ask your veterinarian about therapeutic diets.
How often should I reassess portions?
Track weight, body condition and appetite and review the plan with your veterinary team. Needs change with growth, activity, neutering and health. A food change or weight-management plan needs follow-up rather than relying on one calculation.
