Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a safe dose for my cat?
No calculation can certify safety. This tool converts your entered EPA + DHA target into product equivalents. Have your veterinarian confirm the rate and account for food and other supplements.
Should I use fish oil for my cat’s kidneys?
Kidney disease requires an individual veterinary nutrition plan. Some renal diets already contain EPA + DHA. Choosing Kidney Support clears the example rate and requires a veterinarian-set value.
How do I read my product label?
Add the EPA and DHA milligrams per mL or per capsule. Total fish oil milligrams, total omega-3 and ALA are not interchangeable with EPA + DHA.
Can I use human fish oil supplements?
Ask your veterinarian to check the full ingredient list, concentration and quality controls. Products may contain other ingredients and vitamins; do not substitute cod-liver oil automatically.
More fish-oil questions
Why does the wellness card use 50 mg/kg?
It is an editable arithmetic example, not a universal feline recommendation. The example is not a treatment instruction.
What happens when I choose Joint or Kidney Support?
The entered rate is cleared to prevent an unconfirmed disease-specific dose. Enter the rate your veterinarian has set. Weight, label values and food contribution stay available.
Do I subtract EPA + DHA already in food?
Only if the entered target is a total daily EPA + DHA target inclusive of food. This calculator uses that interpretation. If your prescription is explicitly an additional supplement amount, discuss the calculation basis with your veterinarian.
What if food supplies more than the target?
The extra supplement remainder is zero and the excess is shown separately. The tool does not instruct you to change the diet; review the complete plan with your veterinarian.
Can I give a fraction of a capsule?
Capsule equivalents are arithmetic, not an instruction to split a softgel or round up. Partial contents are difficult to measure consistently. Ask for a suitable liquid or formulation.
How are pumps and droppers calculated?
Pumps use your entered mL per pump; there is no universal pump or dropper size. Leave pump size blank to omit that conversion. Use an appropriately graduated measuring device.
Why do label fields change between forms?
Liquid mode accepts EPA and DHA per mL. Capsule mode accepts them per capsule. Separate saved label values prevent a liquid concentration from silently becoming a capsule strength.
Has a feline safe upper limit been established?
Published veterinary literature reports insufficient evidence to establish an EPA + DHA safe upper limit for cats. Canine limits must not be applied to cats. Possible adverse effects and interactions need veterinary review.
