Crop conversions use a stated trade-weight convention; actual bulk density varies with sample conditions.

Calculation & Worked Example
Frequently Asked Questions
Is grain the same as gram?
No. A grain (gr) is exactly 64.79891 milligrams, or 0.06479891 grams. Agricultural grain is a commodity, not this mass unit.
Which bushel standard is used?
The crop converter uses stated U.S. trade-weight equivalents: shelled corn 56 lb/bu, wheat and soybeans 60 lb/bu, barley 48 lb/bu. These are commodity conventions, not a measurement of the bulk density of your sample.
Does moisture change the standard factor?
No. The trade factor remains the stated lb/bu. Optional wet-basis moisture adjustment changes calculated mass by conserving dry matter; it does not estimate test weight, bulk volume or contract deductions.
Which dram and ounce are supported?
Mass mode lists avoirdupois ounce, troy/apothecaries ounce, avoirdupois dram and apothecaries dram separately. Avoirdupois dram is 1.7718451953125 g; apothecaries dram is 3.8879346 g. There is no ambiguous plain dram option.
More questions about grain conversions
What is a metric tonne versus a short ton?
A metric tonne is exactly 1,000 kg. A U.S. short ton is exactly 2,000 avoirdupois pounds, or 907.18474 kg. The unit menus name them separately.
How is moisture adjustment calculated?
Adjusted mass = starting mass × (100 − current moisture) ÷ (100 − target moisture). Percentages are wet basis, with current and target from 0 up to but excluding 100. Handling loss, respiration, shrink schedules and fees are excluded.
What does Swap units do with moisture enabled?
Swap uses the full-precision result as the new amount, exchanges source and destination units, and exchanges current and target moisture. This reverses the dry-matter conversion, rather than applying the same shrink twice.
Can I enter a custom bushel factor?
Choose User-entered trade weight and enter lb/bu. The result is a stated-factor mass equivalent. The calculator does not certify that it is your local commercial convention or convert a measured volumetric sample.
Can these bushels predict storage volume?
No. Trade bushels are derived using a commodity weight convention. Measured test weight is a separate sample measurement; actual bin volume requires measured bulk density and storage geometry.
Are grain-to-mg conversions exact?
The conversion definitions are exact; displayed decimal values are rounded. Calculation uses unrounded constants internally. Very small or large results use scientific notation to avoid displaying a nonzero value as zero.
Can I use this to choose medication or a ballistic load?
This is a unit converter, not a prescribing or load-development tool. It does not select a medication amount, product or ammunition recipe. Follow the relevant professional instructions and unit definitions.
What do the photos represent?
The sacks, scales and silos are decorative examples, not calibrated measuring devices or a depiction of your exact quantity. Numerical labels are calculated separately from the photos.
