Horse Weight Calculator

Estimate adult horse weight & explore a clear tape-measure guide.

Example dimensions only — all cards use the same adult tape equation, without an automatic breed correction.

cm/in switches preserve the same physical measurements and metric equation.

Measure with Confidence

1 · Heart GirthWrap the tape behind the shoulder, at the base of the withers. Keep it snug and level.

2 · Body LengthWith the horse standing square, measure from the point of shoulder to the point of buttock.

3 · Repeat & RecordUse the same technique each time. A livestock scale is the reference for actual weight.

Adult estimate only — conformation and measurement technique affect accuracy.

What This Estimate Tells You

Useful for tracking measured size over time. Weight alone does not establish body condition, ideal weight or a medication dose.

Guide score 5 · Moderate

Back level; ribs not visible but easily felt; tailhead fat slightly spongy. Assess neck, withers, behind shoulder, ribs, back and tailhead with trained guidance.

Use a scale when precision matters

Two-measurement equations can be less accurate for ponies, draft types and unusual body condition. This tool does not select a treatment dose.

Formula & Worked Example

Weight (kg) = girth(cm)² × length(cm) ÷ 11,877 180² × 160 ÷ 11,877 = 436.47 kg 436.47 ÷ 0.45359237 = 962.26 lb 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly. BCS is observed separately; no ideal weight is inferred.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a scale weight or an estimate?

It is an adult tape estimate using heart girth and body length. It does not replace a livestock scale. Conformation, body condition and measurement technique affect accuracy.

Where should I place the girth tape?

Take heart girth just behind the shoulder and at the base of the withers, keeping the tape snug. Stand the horse square and use consistent technique. The illustrated loop is schematic, not to scale.

Does choosing a breed change the equation?

No. Cards load editable example measurements only. All use girth(cm) squared times length(cm) divided by 11,877. They do not apply a validated pony, draft or racing-horse correction.

Can weight tell me the Henneke score?

No. Henneke BCS assesses fat cover across neck, withers, behind shoulder, ribs, back and tailhead using visual and hands-on assessment. It is recorded separately from estimated weight.

More horse-weight questions
Why is the divisor 11,877?

This adult two-measurement equation is tabulated in published horse weight-estimation research. Other resources round the metric divisor to 11,880 or use other models; those give slightly different estimates. This tool consistently uses 11,877 in both unit modes.

What happens when I switch cm and inches?

Physical dimensions are preserved using exactly 2.54 cm per inch. The same underlying metric equation is used; switching units does not substitute a different imperial equation.

How is body length measured?

For this model, measure from the point of shoulder to the point of buttock with the horse standing square. The photo is a schematic location guide, not a scale drawing or a way to measure a real horse from an image.

Are the preset dimensions recommended breed sizes?

No. The 180/160 cm light-horse, 140/120 cm pony and 230/200 cm draft entries are editable examples. They are not breed norms, ideal dimensions or age-specific guidance.

Is this suitable for foals, young horses or pregnancy?

The model shown is an adult tape estimate. Young or growing animals and unusual conformation or physiological states may require other validated models and professional assessment. The tool does not make those adjustments.

Can I use the number to choose a medication dose?

No. This converter does not select a treatment, medication rate or dose. Where exact weight is needed, use a scale and follow your veterinarian’s individual instructions.

What do the Henneke guide buttons change?

They show a reference score description only. They do not change weight or your separately entered Observed BCS. Selecting an observed score records your assessment; it is not inferred from this calculator.

Is a moderate BCS always the right target?

Appropriate condition depends on individual horse, discipline and health. The guide describes the Henneke scale; it does not set an ideal weight or certify health. Discuss targets and changes with an equine veterinarian or nutritionist.
