Material Planning Summary

MaterialQuantityBasis

Formula & Assumptions

Perimeter = 2 × (length + width)

Posts = 2 × ceil(length / spacing) + 2 × ceil(width / spacing)

Gate openings and extra wire adjust material totals.

View calculation details

Post spacing is a maximum. Corners are shared, not counted twice. A rectangular gate is modeled as one centered opening on the length side; its two end posts are included. Custom perimeters give an approximate post count because the individual side lengths and gate locations are unknown. Brace assemblies are separate from the base post count. Staples/clips use an editable-design estimate of two fasteners per post per strand; mesh uses eight per post. Actual hardware depends on the fence system. The pasture illustration is schematic and does not depict every calculated post.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which fence type suits my livestock?

The animal cards apply illustrative starting values, not installation specifications. Cattle uses four strands; horses uses five visible smooth strands, not barbed wire. Sheep/goats and pigs add a woven-wire layer with two and one supplemental strands respectively. Verify fence height, mesh openings, electrification and spacing with local guidance and the manufacturer.

How are gates and corner braces counted?

Gate width is deducted from the wire run. In rectangular mode one centered gate is assumed on a length side and posts are counted separately along the two remaining runs. Four corner posts are included in the base count; optional brace assemblies are listed separately.

Can I use meters instead of feet?

Yes. Switching units converts all length inputs and retains the same physical dimensions. Wire rolls are always rounded up to whole rolls.

What post spacing is best for cattle?

Spacing depends on the wire, terrain, tension and post system. The 8 ft preset is a planning example, not a universal standard. Follow the appropriate local specification.

How many strands do I need for horses?

The five-strand preset is illustrative. Select a visible, horse-appropriate fence system and follow its manufacturer requirements; barbed wire is not selected by this calculator.
