Formula & Worked Example

Coverage at target depth = reference area × reference depth ÷ target depth

Bales = round up(bed area ÷ effective coverage)

1,000 ÷ 40 = 25 bales

Depth and shape assumptions

Depth scaling assumes an approximately constant loose material volume per bale. Real spreading, compression and settling may differ. Rectangle: length × width. Circle or ring: π × (outer radius² − inner radius²). Use net Custom Area for irregular beds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does bale size change the estimate?

Different bale sizes and packing can contain different amounts of material. Enter the supplier’s coverage and the depth at which that coverage is stated. Round/Jumbo and Custom modes require their own specifications.

Can I calculate a tree ring?

Yes. Select Circular / Tree Ring and enter outer and inner radii. The inner area is excluded from the coverage estimate. Use zero inner radius for a full circular bed.

Does longleaf straw always cover more?

No universal coverage multiplier is applied. Needle species is recorded for context; supplier bale coverage and reference depth control the material calculation.

How deep should pine straw be?

Suitable depth varies by planting, material, weed pressure and existing mulch. Extension guidance differs by use. Enter the additional layer you intend to apply, and keep it away from trunks and plant crowns.

How often should pine straw be replenished?

Inspect the existing layer as it settles and decomposes. Replenishment depends on site conditions and the remaining depth; the calculator does not predict product lifespan.
