Make Your Pace Meaningful

Freestyle
  • Keep breathing and stroke rhythm consistent.
  • Compare sessions in the same pool length.
  • Use moving time for swim-only pace; elapsed time includes rest.

Calculation & Assumptions

Pace per 100 m
= total seconds ÷ distance (m) × 100
Lengths
= distance ÷ pool length
Time per length
= total seconds ÷ lengths
Average speed (km/h)
= distance (m) ÷ seconds × 3.6

Yards are converted using 1 yd = 0.9144 m. This is not a race-course time conversion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a lap one length or two?

Usage varies. Here a length is one crossing of the pool, and a round trip is out and back: two lengths. In a 25 m pool, 400 m gives 16 lengths or 8 round trips. If the distance is not a whole multiple of the pool length, displayed counts include a partial length.

Can I use yards?

Yes. Distance can be entered in metres or yards. Switching the distance unit converts the physical distance using 1 yd = 0.9144 m and changes the main pace reference to 100 of the selected unit. Pool length is selected separately. This does not apply a race-time adjustment for different courses, turns or strokes.

Should rest breaks be included?

Use moving time for swim-only pace. If you enter elapsed time including rest, those rests are included in the calculated average. The split table and projected times are even-pace arithmetic from that average, not recorded splits or predicted race performance.
